Background history of the project
Local Partners
Ambika, an organisation which gathers more than 250 growers in 7 villages and Himshikha Development Project, a relay NGO coordinating the program and receiving the development subsidies.
Context/Stakes
Intensive growth of cotton is a very polluting activity which consumes a lot of water. Health problems linked to the growth of cotton are frequent and serious. Water resources are becoming rare. The revenues of producers fluctuate highly.
Program Description
Drafting of a development plan around three themes: Production/Health/Development. The aim is to improve health, revenues and to give farmers and their families access to education.
Territorial development of the program was organised in a "snail shape" to avoid chemical contamination and to limit the risk of reselling of conventional cotton to producers not included in the program.
-Technicians spread organic cotton production techniques (preparation of natural pesticides and fertilizers, crop rotation, ...)
-Temporary installation of a medical camp for the village farers (2005).
-Distribution of organic cotton seeds.
-Building of toilet blocks, purchase of tin dishes with the cash available from the social fund financed by the partnering company.
